Freddie Hubbard is one of my very favorite trumpet players. I don't have many of his recordings, but I have been very impressed with what I have heard. He has a very sassy style that is very hot and spicy. His sound is a trademark for him. Hubbard was one of the most talented trumpeters to emerge in the late 1950s. He took Lee Morgan's place in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and like Morgan, was influenced by Clifford Brown. After moving to New York he made his mark in quite a few areas. Outside of joining Blakey's band, he received a contract from Blue Note records and made some fine recordings (his "Best of" on the Blue Note label is excellent!) He then recorded with Eric Dolphy and also with Ornette Coleman on Coleman's classic Free Jazz album. He later cut some fusion records in the 1970s and is still playing today.
